Second “Ivy Zoo” Symposium - May 15-17, 2012 in Budapest, Hungary

Barrackpore Menagerie (1800-1883).  Watercolor by Charles D'Oley (1820)

The second “Ivy Zoo” Symposium will take place May 15-17, 2012 in Budapest, Hungary (see more details) So far we know two people from India who have registered, e.g. Sally Walker of ZOO and Mr. B.P. Ravi, IFS, Director of Mysore Zoo. Sally is giving a presentation on the oldest zoo in India, e.g. Barrackpore Menagerie (1800-1883), (See abstract) and Mr. Ravi will speak about Mysore Zoo (1909 to present). The Barrackpore Menagerie started as a scientific project to identify, inventory, illustrate and describe all taxa of the Indian subcontinent. It morphed into a zoo with a wide range of visitors until replaced by Calcutta Zoo. Photos all are from Indian Office Library via Sally Walker’s collection.
